BDCP Center for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research


This Center is located on Aku Road, Nsukka in South Eastern Nigeria. It was established in response to the need for dynamic comprehensive laboratory services in the country. The center consists of a laboratory, a plant drying and processing unit and a Conference center. This Center also houses the BDCP Secretariat in Nsukka.

The capabilities of the Center for Medicinal and Aromatic Plant Research include processing and standardization of phytomedicine as well as maintaining a full herbarium and ethnobotanical database. This center is a solution to the dialogue being held over the years on standardization of herbal medicines and thus is open to both local and international scientists as well as herbalists/ traditional healers. In this Center, extraction of selected medicinal plants, initial bioassay screens of extracts and bulk extraction of plant material for drug development are performed. The Center also maintains an extract bank which incorporates inventory of the extracts, their distribution and their status in the test systems. Brine Shrimp lethality bioassays, Potato disc assays, TLC, Bioassay- guided fractionation, Chromatographic techniques, Isolation of compounds, Spectra studies and Chemical analysis will be conducted in the laboratory.

BDCP will appreciate assistance in the form of laboratory equipment such as High Pressure Liqul 'd Chromatography, Chromatotron, Gas Chromatography, Countercurrent Chromatography (CCC), Spectroscopic equipment (MS, NMR, UV, FTIR, etc.), Freezers and Freeze Dryers for this unique center.
