Sub-Regional Workshop on Biotechnology:
Cell and Tissue Culture Techniques

The Bioresources Development and Conservation Programme (BDCP) and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) are holding a Sub-regional training workshop on Biotechnology: Cell and Tissue Culture Technique at University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The two-week course which is scheduled for October 20 - November 2, 1996 is aimed at introducing young scientists from universities, research institutes and relevant industries to the modern biotechnological techniques of Plant cell and tissue culture with applications to agriculture and industries. Areas that will be covered in this training workshop include Cell and Tissue culture techniques, Fermentation technology and enzyme production as well as Gene cloning and DNA manipulation. The course outline consists of lectures and laboratory sessions covering procedures for plant regeneration, micropropagation, virus elimination, Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), protein and iso- enzyme electrophoresis. Resource persons with indepth knowledge and experience in biotechnology have been drawn from universities, research 'institutes, government and industries all through the country. A workshop proceeding will be published at the end of the course to act as a guideline for similar courses in future.

It is our hope that at the end of the course, participants will not only utilize the knowledge for efficient laboratory services but also teach colleagues at their various stations leadina to a gradual network of biotechnologists.
